Find an Appraiser
The Appraisal Institute is the largest organization of professional appraisers in the U.S. Appraisers who have earned the MAI designation from The Appraisal Institute have passed a rigorous screening process that includes a series of courses, a comprehensive examination, production of a demonstration appraisal report that is similar to a thesis, and proof of years of experience as a practicing appraiser. The designation indicates competence in the valuation of commercial real estate. Appraisers who have earned the SRA designation have followed a similar course to prove their competence in the valuation of residential real estate.
A second source of referrals to appraisers with proven experience is through the Boards of Registration of Real Estate Appraisers for each state. State-licensed real estate appraisers follow a similar (though generally less rigorous) screening process to prove their competence. Certified General real estate appraisers have proven expertise in the valuation of commercial real estate. Licensed real estate appraisers are competent in residential valuation.
